There are several ways to apply copper tarnish. Each method varies in intensity and chemical complexity. Pick the one that fits your comfort level with household chemicals.
The Sal Ammoniac Solution
This method uses specific chemical compounds to create a rapid, even tarnish. You need to mix these ingredients carefully.
- One part sal ammoniac
- Three parts cream of tartar
- Three parts common salt
- Eight parts cupric nitrate
- Twelve parts boiling water
Combine the solids with the boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Brush the solution onto the copper item. Let it dry completely. The copper will darken as the solution reacts with the surface. Handle with gloves. Cupric nitrate and sal ammoniac are irritants.
The Vinegar Drip Method
If you want targeted tarnish, use acetic acid. Standard white vinegar works. It’s the weakest option but the safest.
Drip vinegar directly onto the areas you want to age. Do not submerge the piece. The acid attacks the copper where it touches. Watch it closely. Copper reacts fast. The Sulfur and Vaseline Paste

- Store in a glass container. Plastic can degrade with sulfur exposure.
Coat the copper item with a thin film of the paste. Leave it alone. Wait until the copper reaches your desired level of tarnish. It could take hours. It could take days. The sulfur combines with the copper to form copper sulfide.
Wash off the paste with gasoline. Yes, gasoline. It dissolves the Vaseline. Use in a well-ventilated area. Keep sparks away. Gasoline is highly flammable. Rinse the copper thoroughly after the Vaseline is gone.
Ammonium Sulfate Immersion
This is a slower, more controlled process. It involves submerging the item.
- Prepare a 10 percent ammonium sulfate solution.
- Immerse the copper item for 12 hours.
- Remove it and let it air dry.
Check the color after 12 hours. If it isn’t dark enough, repeat the procedure. Each cycle adds more tarnish. This method is less likely to cause uneven spotting than the vinegar drip. But it requires patience. You are essentially forcing oxidation over time.
