How to set a formal table for a 4 course meal

A well-placed table has quiet power. This way your guests know you have everything under control before they say anything. It represents effort. It says you care.

Official table settings are more than just traditions. It’s all about functionality. Place the pallet in the dining room. You need to know where each dish goes so guests don’t have to guess.

Let’s look at a specific menu. Salad, soup, meat appetizer and finally dessert. We also offer rolls and salads. This is the general order. Requires a certain layout. If you order wrong, your customers will be confused. You want to avoid this situation.

The special layout method is as follows.

Basic information: Plates and Main course cutlery

Start from the bottom. Place plates on the table for each setting. This is your anchor. Located in the middle of the guest space.

Then stack the salad plate directly on top of the dinner plate. This way the surface stays clean until the salad is ready.

Move to the left side of the disc. This is the location of the main fork. Use a large fork. Place it on the left side.

Place the knife on the right side of the plate. This is the main table knife. Make sure the blade is facing the board. This is a safety feature. Prevents accidental cuts when reaching across the table. It also looks sharper and more purposeful.

Add salad and soup utensils

Serve the salad first. That’s why tools are needed. Place the small salad fork to the left of the large dinner fork.

Remember the rule: eat from the outside in. Use the outermost cutlery first. In this case, the salad fork is on the far left. Use the main fork first.

Now look at the right side of the knife. Place the spoon. This is the second course. It’s next to the knife.

We also have rolls. These should be cut with a knife and greased. Place a small butter knife on the right side of the spoon. This is the rightmost container in the cluster.

Dessert and bread arrangement

Dessert comes last. You don’t want dirty pages. Place the dessert utensils on the plate instead.

If you use a fork and spoon to eat dessert, line them up carefully. Place the dessert fork closest to the plate. The handle is to the left. Place a dessert spoon on the fork. The handle points to the right. This arrangement is unique. Separate dessert utensils and cutlery.

If it’s bread, don’t put it on the plate. I use a small loaf pan. Place it on the left side of the fork. It’s on a salad fork. This way, your main dish remains bright for salad or soup.

Glassware and napkins

Finally, there is glass. Place it on the right side of the plate, near the tip of the main table knife. This is easy to implement. It does not block cutlery.

Napkins are difficult. They can penetrate wine glasses.
