One advantage of this alloy is maintenance. Because the cobalt is throughout the bit, not just a surface layer, you can sharpen them. You need cutting fluid to keep the heat down while grinding. Do this and the bit retains its strength.
The gold color might wear off during sharpening. That is fine. It is still alloy. It is still harder than standard high-speed steel.
Cost vs. Longevity
They cost more. You will pay a premium upfront compared to black oxide or standard steel bits. Black oxide bits are common for plastics and carbon steel. Diamond bits handle tile and glass. But for hard metals, cobalt is the only real choice for longevity.
If you drill metal regularly, the extra cost pays for itself. These bits last longer. You replace them less often.
